Movies I’ve Seen Recently
So I have a BIG list of movies that I saw in NYC with Gabe to go through soon but first I thought I’d knock out these most recent films I’ve watched in five sentences or less for each.
JCVD: A lot of you asked what I thought about this one and my conclusion of this movie is: AWESOME. Not only does it have action as is to be expected but it’s funny, truly funny. Van Damme also has a monologue that’s pretty epic. It was interesting to see JCVD poke fun at the persona of the action star while also exploring the weightier issues that come with being a worldwide poster child for a genre.
Iron Man 2: A lot of people on the internet have been discussing how unrealistic the second installment of the Tony Stark Variety Hour was but can we keep in mind that it’s a superhero movie? It’s not going to be realistic, it’s going to be fun. And this movie is fun. While the first movie was mostly character development, this one had an enjoyable blend of action, humor, and Sam Rockwell a) in glasses and b) dancing. WATCH THE GIF.
An American Werewolf in London: Yes, it was my first time seeing this (my mom thought this would be too scary but Poltergeist was okay for a kid somehow). I had high expectations after being told by a few people how it’s a perfect movie and it really didn’t disappoint. Almost thirty years later, the effects are still fantastic, the timing is spot perfect, the use of music is clever without being too precious, and it is truly both hilarious and scary. I’m not going to see the 1997 Tom Everett Scott sequel though, no matter how much I love That Thing You Do!.
Cemetery Man: I know it’s not 1998 anymore and thus not relevant but I’m still bummed that I don’t have a shot with Rupert Everett. I especially feel that way after watching him in the Italian horror/comedy hybrid, Cemetery Man. He plays a cemetery caretaker who has to kill the zombies who rise on his grounds every night. What could be a generic zombie flick is saved by the wry comedy of a truly bizarre and unique script and the stylish look of how it’s shot. Also, it’s really romantic. I know, who would’ve thought?
More reviews coming soon on things such as The Human Centipede, Please Give, Ondine, among others. A LOT of others.
I 100% agree with your assessment on American Werewolf in London. I loved it as a kid and still love that movie. And you are wise to steer clear of the sequel.
